Use cases

Say it instead of typing it

If you type it, you can say it. And since it all runs on your Mac, that includes the private stuff.

At work

  • Email replies. Say the answer, get a finished email.
  • Slack and Teams. Quick updates without stopping to type.
  • Meeting notes. Talk through the call, get action items with names.
  • Tickets and pull requests. Describe the bug out loud, get a clean write-up.
  • Sales follow-ups. Recap the call while it’s still fresh.

School and teaching

  • Lesson plans. Talk through tomorrow’s class, get an outline.
  • Parent emails. Clear and kind, in about a minute.
  • Grading comments. Say the feedback, it comes out tidy.
  • Essay first drafts. Get the ideas down before they slip.
  • Study notes. Turn a ramble into bullets.

Private work, any profession

  • Visit notes. Say the summary after each visit. It stays on your Mac.
  • Referral letters. Talk it through, get a clean letter to send.
  • Client and case notes. Lawyers, therapists, advisors. The words stay on your Mac.
  • HR and money. Reviews, budgets and anything you’d never paste into a chatbot.
  • Works offline. No Wi-Fi? Still works.

Writing and life

  • First drafts. Posts, chapters and scripts at talking speed.
  • Social captions. Say it casual, keep it casual.
  • Talks and sermons. Rough out the outline by saying it.
  • Sore wrists. Type less on the days it hurts.
  • Private notes. Journal, health, money. None of it leaves your Mac.

Specs

What your Mac needs

Chip
Apple Silicon, M1 or newer. Intel Macs aren’t supported.
macOS
14 (Sonoma) or later.
Memory
16 GB recommended. Voiceinator uses about 5 GB while it runs, so an 8 GB Mac will feel tight with other apps open.
Storage
About 6 GB for the app and its models. 2.9 GB more if you turn on the Accurate model.
Internet
Not needed to dictate. Only used for app updates and the optional Accurate download.

The models

  • Speech to text: Whisper large-v3 turbo, 4-bit. Fast, and the default.
  • Cleanup: Qwen 2.5 7B Instruct, 4-bit.
  • Optional: Whisper large-v3, for long dictations. Slower, and a 2.9 GB download.

Both default models come inside the app and run on your Mac with Apple’s MLX.

For the fastest results

  • Leave it running. The models stay loaded, so each dictation starts right away.
  • Stick with the Fast model. Switch to Accurate only for dictations longer than about 15 seconds.
  • Use 16 GB of memory or more, or close heavy apps on an 8 GB Mac.
  • Turn off Low Power Mode. It slows the chip down.
  • If cleanup takes longer than 1.5 seconds, you get your words as spoken, so you’re never left waiting.

Price

It’s free. Like, actually free.

Paid dictation apps cost about $132 a year, and a lot of them send your voice to the cloud. Voiceinator costs nothing and stays on your Mac.

The paid ones

About $132 a year

  • A bill every month or year
  • Cloud apps send your audio to their servers
  • Some free tiers cap how much you can say

Average of the yearly Pro plans for Wispr Flow ($144), Aqua Voice ($96), Willow ($144) and Monologue ($144), from each app’s pricing page, October 2026.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it really free?
Yes. No account, no card, no trial.
Which Macs does it run on?
Macs with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 14 or later.
Which apps does it work in?
Any app you can type in. The text goes wherever your cursor is.
How do I set it up?
Install it, then allow Microphone, Accessibility and Input Monitoring when your Mac asks. Quit and reopen it once, and you’re set.
Does it need the internet?
No. Both models come inside the app. The internet is only used for updates.
Will it spell my names and jargon right?
Add them to your word list: client names, course codes, Q-SYS, Dante. It uses the list every time.
Can I change the key?
Yes. Right Option is the default. You can pick any combo, and choose hold or tap.
Why is the download so big?
It’s about 4.4 GB because both speech models come inside the app. That’s also why it works offline.
